Kansas Governor Laura Kelly will be at the Eudora Township Public Library on Thursday, May 30, to lead a ceremonial bill signing for Senate Bill 59, the Eudora Community Library District Act.
Senate Bill 59 allows the Eudora Township and the City of Eudora to form, through joint resolution, a Eudora Community Library District. The creation of a library district would allow residents of the Eudora Township and the City of Eudora to continue to cooperatively fund and govern a community library, as they have since 1968. The bill was needed as a remedy to an unintended complication that resulted when the city changed from a 3rd class city to a 2nd class city in 2011.
“This bill is an important step in stabilizing the funding and governance of our local library,” said Carol Wohlford, director of the Eudora Library. “It will allow us to continue to grow and offer the services that our patrons in the community have come to expect and rely on. Getting to this point has been a long and challenging process, and there’s still a lot of work to do. But we’re excited to finally be able to start looking at the future, and how our library can grow along with the community that we serve.”
The Eudora Community Library District Act was sponsored by Senator Tom Holland and passed the Kansas Senate on Feb. 27. It was approved by the Kansas House of Representatives on March 20 and officially signed into law by Governor Kelly on April 2.
Thursday’s ceremonial signing will take place at the Eudora Public Library at 2:30 p.m. The event is open to the public.
